Getting started

I am going to leave this pretty open to my students.  I want them to post pictures to our "map" of places on campus and even around town of places others in class might not know about.  For instance, my office right across the hall from the LGBTQA Resource Center.  I know there are a few in class who are aware it exists, but most do now.  So my plan is to start our map by posting a picture of the resource center and get started that way.  I am going to ask them to use the hashtag #TishlyU100.  That way we should all see each other's posts.  I am very very new to Instagram so I am sure there will be a large learning curve for me.....

Project idea

Okay, so I still don't feel like I really have this Web 2.0 thing handled.  I'm trying.  I do feel like I am doing an okay job keeping up with the time.  I really feel like being a part of a University, which keeps me around young people helps to keep me moving forward.  However slowly that might be.  I have never used Instagram before, but as I was sitting here trying to think of what I could do with my Univ 100 class this semester I thought this might be a good idea.

I don't really have it all worked out yet, but what I am thinking I will do is have each of them either create or use their account to create a photo map.  We will use a hash tag for our class and then move around campus taking photos of different spots/things.  Some ideas I have right now are to have them share some of their favorite places on campus.  Possibly have them share different places they feel are little know and could be beneficial to others in class.  We could also share photos of events we are attending with others in class....

I like getting the feed back from other students in class.  Their ideas are very helpful.  Tomorrow I plan to chat with one of the grad students in our office (Admissions) to get some hits and tips about using Instagram.  He is very very knowledgeable about all this stuff and I want to run some of my ideas and thought by him to see if Instagram will work for what I am thinking.

I also plan to chat with my U100 class about my idea and be sure all of them or at least most of them use Instagram.  If not, hopefully they (or at least some of them) will be willing to get the app.

I am planning to have the students map out places on campus they have found that fit a couple different criteria; little known, great for studying, great for hanging out, favorite, etc.  I did a scavenger hunt with them earlier this semester and they really enjoyed doing it.  Hopefully they will really get into this as well and this will be the start of a very fun and interactive activity I can expand on each semester and improve...
